History

How was the Beehive name chosen?
The founding families were trying to decide on a name for hours. While working at Norma Howatt’s dining room table in the wee hours of the morning (3:30am!), Norma said that we should be named the Beehive as we were as busy as bees (and Norma was a beekeeper at the time!).

The Beehive changed its name for a few years. What was our original name?
Drayton Valley Association for the Developmentally Handicapped.

When was the Beehive founded?
The Beehive was founded on September 26, 1975 and became incorporated in 1976 as a non-profit registered charity.

What other areas of support did the Beehive provide before we changed our mandate to only support adults with developmental disabilities?
Brain Injuries as well as Children’s Services.

When the Beehive first started, where did daily operations take place?
The Lutheran Church was the base for the Beehive’s “trial run”. Later the organization operated in the basement of the National Supply building.

Where did the Beehive Office and Bottle Depot operate out of before it moved to our current building?
Thunder Alley Bowling Alley

What was the name of our first residential home?
Green Acres
